HATS OFF TO THE LADIES OF THE SKY!

Today’s American airports are jam packed with people whose flights have been cancelled and angry passengers who elbow their way into the boarding line. Passengers pay for their luggage to be checked in and the avoid eye contact as they “greet” passengers at the cabin doors. Believe it or not, there was a magical time when flying was chic. Passengers would dress to the nines to travel and airports were filled with energy and happy smiling helpful staff. Stewardesses dressed in designer uniforms with matching hat, crisp gloves, perfect hair, immaculate make-up, and chic luggage.

In 1930, Ellen Church lent a feminine touch on air travel. She approached Boeing Air Transport with the idea of having nurses on board their flights. Boeing recognized her vision and soon Ellen, and seven other female nurses became the first stewardesses of the air. The ladies were required to wear military style uniforms and their tasks included serving food and drinks to the flight crew as well as loading luggage, refueling the plane and securing passengers wicker chairs into the planes floor with a hammer and nails. Stewardesses had height and weight requirements, hair and makeup rules and mandatory retirement once they married or reached a certain age.

Soon after WW II, airplanes became available for civilian transportation. Flying in the early 1950’s was very expensive, so airlines created luxurious travel services provided by a lovely young stewardesses with a smile.

During the golden age, Hollywood created a screen image to glamorize the career of a stewardess and the luxury of air travel. Teen magazines featured advertisements for Stewardess Colleges, claiming, “For girls who like adventure and travel plus a fine salary.” All of these ideas gave hope to young women who wanted an alternative female career path. With a career as a stewardess, a girl could greet on-coming passengers at lunchtime in New York and say good-bye before dinner in California. It was a glamorous career path that allowed women to see the world for the very first time on their own terms.

But not just any pretty girl off the street could become a stewardess. Each airline created their own training programs and the competition became fierce. In the 1950’s American Airlines founded the first stewardess college in Texas. Training courses included food service, emergency procedures and even airplane construction. A typical classroom would include a full scale mock-up of a plane which allowed them to properly practice pushing their carts between the passenger isles and serving food and drinks in a professionally elegant manner.

Once the lovely ladies made it through training, they were custom fit for uniforms and taken to the beauty shop for a proper makeover including hair, make-up and nails. Many of the girls wore wigs or falls to ensure the perfect hairstyle and strict regulations were placed on hair color and styles. National Airlines published a Stewardess Flight Manual with instructions on how cosmetics must harmonize with skin tones and they should refrain from repairing make-up in view of passengers.

By the 1960’s airlines began to commission world famous designers to design their uniforms. Valentino created chic cashmere for TWA airlines, Pucci launched a line inspired by space age fashion and with the sexual revolution in the air, uniforms went from dull and boring to short and sassy. Fun vibrant color combinations and patterns were introduced and paired with fishnets, go-go boots and big hair. Planes were designed with multi level dinning rooms and cocktail piano bars. Of course fashion had to advance along with the technology of the aerospace age. Companies like TWA introduced foreign accent flights were stewardesses would dress in costume to reflect styles from around the world. There was an Italian toga uniform, a French inspired gold mini dress, and a pajama uniform to mimic the Manhattan Penthouse Girl. The ladies would work to foreign music and serve foreign newspapers and magazines to create the exotic atmosphere. Another risky attempt to spark customer’s interest happened in 1965; Emilio Pucci showcased his Gemini 4 collection for Braniff Airlines, launching the "air strip" uniforms. Passengers were greeted by a hostess in a gabardine coat, pillbox hat and scarf, and during the flight, she slowly stripped down to a skintight silk turtleneck tunic and matching culottes.

Well-known airlines created advertising campaigns to capitalize on their fun and sassy ladies of the sky. National Airline designed print advertisements featuring a beautiful young woman with fun flowing text “I’m going to fly you like you’ve never been flown before.” The ladies were professional career girls who traveled the world, yet sex symbols at the same time.

Although the days of cocktail hour around a piano bar, and three course meals served by a stewardess in fishnets and mini skirts are gone, we can still celebrate and recognize a time when flying was glamorous and being a stewardess was every girls’ dream. Hats off to the ladies of the sky!

My Favorite Career 1966

While shopping row after row of endless toy's at the local Toys-R-Us, the new Barbie collection really caught my eye! Apparently Barbie did a collection of Favorite Career's for girls and a Stewardess was one of them.

The Stewardess Barbie comes in a 1966 Pan American Airways uniform. The ensemble consists of blue-gray suit with authentic period detailing, including the Pan Am emblem. She is accessorized with white gloves, black handbag, black high heels and a supper cute pill box hat.

Maybe if I cross my fingers long enough one will make it's way into my Stewardess collection.

Seems link Uncle Karl likes feathers and antique keys as much as we do. Chanel built a version of a Marie Antoinette’s barnyard in the Grand Palais to present his Spring Summer 2010 collection. Katy Perry was decked out in feathers and Uncle Karl wore an amazing key and chain around his neck.

As part of the 10 day bicycle festival, Cyclesomatic, the Cube Creative and Oak Cliff Bicycle Company present the Tyler Street Block Party. It will be a fun filled evening of music from Boom Boom Box, and the Happy Bullets, DJ's, a photography opening by Photopol.us, an art-bike show held by the Cube Creative. BikeDenton and the OCBC will hold several competitions including Track Stands, a Slow Bike Race, and more. The evening will be partially sponsored by Ben E. Keith. Be there, and be square! Strangely, airlines and airplanes and air travel continue to still look pretty much the same, no matter which airline you fly. In fact, most of us would say that the in-flight experience is getting worse each day. Premium-class prices warrant a slightly more tolerable experience, but it is still tough to really tell one experience from the other.

An airplane is of course transportation, and not a hotel, spa or restaurant, but we have been waiting for a long time for the first airline that is willing to embark on true differentiation. Taking cues from cool architecture, leading-edge design and the vibes we see ahead of, and outside of, trends, The Coolhunter is now working on creating truly cool airline experiences, giving premium-class passengers a real reason to select one airline over another.

Absolutely everything— from the on-board entertainment, furnishings and decor, to exclusive on-board shopping — will be curated by TCH. Rather than being mundane, boring and almost same as all other airlines, the TCH-curated in-flight experience will be really something worth talking about. A very special headband

While vending at the LA Renegade I ran into Jamila Tazewell the Owner/ Designer of 11:11 enterprises. We first met at the Austin Maker Faire, where she purchased a white feather fascinator headband with a vintage blue embelishment from me. She shared a very special story with me about that headband.

"It was great seeing you again! Here is a picture of me in your gorgeous creation from my wedding day.... As I told you, your headpiece saved me! I am a real girly girl and so I never in a million years thought I would get married in sweatpants! They were white, but still....anyhow, we wanted to elope and we really didnt have much time at all to plan it, in secret, so I had to make do...wearing your feather creation made me feel truly special on that day. This pic I attached was taken on a walk we took in the woods that afternoon after we did it. It was a beautiful, very private time I will treasure forever. Thank you again for making beautiful things, and thank you for that gorgeous piece!!! I am so glad I met you at that show in Austin!"

ATLANTA (AP) -- The union that represents flight attendants who worked for Northwest Airlines before it was bought by Delta Air Lines is crying foul over Delta's failure to offer bigger sizes for its signature red dress uniform designed by Richard Tyler.

When he was hired to create his uniform collection, Tyler said he wanted them to "look sexy and great."

The Northwest chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA has filed a grievance with the world's largest airline operator, asking it to offer the red dress up to size 28. The union hopes the grievance will go to mediation in August.

The red dress currently is only offered up to size 18, though a Delta spokeswoman said the airline offers a range of outfits in other colors and styles up to size 28 that flight attendants can wear.

Patricia Reller, who handles grievances for the union's executive committee, said Friday that even if there was only one flight attendant who wore a size over 18, that person should be able to wear the stylish red dress.

"I think red is an eye-popping color and it's not subtle, and to me by not offering it in a size over 18, Delta is saying, 'We don't want you wearing that if you are over size 18,'" Reller said. "But the job isn't about being sexy. It's about safety."

Reller said she did not know how many pre-merger Northwest flight attendants want to wear the red dress but need a size bigger than 18.

"If the dress wasn't a tiny size 18, there would be less," Reller said. "It's a very small size 18, so that makes the numbers a lot larger."

Delta spokeswoman Gina Laughlin could not immediately say why the red dress is not available in bigger sizes while other uniform options are. But she said there have been few complaints.

"The majority of pre-merger Northwest flight attendants have given us very positive feedback about the Richard Tyler Collection," Laughlin said.

Delta hired Tyler in 2004 to do a makeover of its gray employee uniforms. Tyler, whose dresses have been worn by stars such as Julia Roberts, Heather Locklear and Jamie Lee Curtis, promised a classier -- and in some cases, sexier -- look for flight attendants, airport agents and other workers.

"I want them to look sexy and great, but you have to keep that classic look as well," Tyler told The Associated Press at the time.

The uniforms -- including white blouses and navy dresses besides the red dress -- debuted in 2006. Atlanta-based Delta acquired Northwest in October 2008. Pre-merger Northwest employees began wearing the Delta uniforms on March 30.

Delta said at the time it announced its plans for the new uniforms that the decision was a "wise investment" that would boost morale among employees and increase the airline's bottom line in the long run.

According to Delta, flight attendants must be able to perform the safety and security functions of their job, including being able to reach and close overhead bins, reach and close any of the aircraft doors and be able to sit on the aircraft jumpseat and fasten the flight attendants seatbelt.

Reller said a flight attendant who wears above a size 18 can do all of those functions well.

"The sizing of our red dress has not been an issue with Delta flight attendants since the program's inception three years ago. This is AFA hype leading up to the election," Laughlin said.

There are roughly 21,000 flight attendants at the combined airline, 14,000 from pre-merger Delta and 7,000 from pre-merger Northwest.

The Northwest workers are represented by a union, while the Delta workers are not. At some point there will be a representation election at which the combined workforce will decide whether it wants to be represented by a union or not. The two groups also must decide on how to integrate their seniority lists.

Today was a day of mapping it out! We slapped a fresh coat of slate gray paint on the floor, moved the adjustable walls in the studio...and forgot about the Texas heat with the help of Wendy's and a few adult drinkies.

Ex-stewardess publishes memoir

A former stewardess has published a memoir of her sexual escapades in the sky.
The Singaporean stewardess, identified as Chew, 35, published The Mile Hi! Club: Memoirs of a Stewardess last Wednesday.
Chew confided that she had received more than 20 requests for sex from passengers in her years as a stewardess but claimed she had turned down all of them.

Sex in the air?

ONCE, she caught an air stewardess under her charge engaging in hanky panky with an Australian passenger in the plane's toilet. Another time, she claimed, a local 'leading man' told her that he had sex with an air stewardess in the crew bunk.

Such tales of sexual trysts at 35,000 feet are revealed in a new tell-all book, The Mile Hi! Club: Memoirs Of A Stewardess, by former air stewardess Janet Chew, 35. The title is a pun on the term 'mile high club', which refers to people who have had sex in the air.

All the names in the book - launched last Wednesday - have been changed and the airline Ms Chew worked with is also not named, except it is 'reputably one of the best in the world'. Ms Chew, who quit flying last year, worked for the airline for 13 years. So is Ms Chew, who is married with a son, a member of the mile high club? 'That is a very interesting question,' she said, before laughing. After a pause, and some explanation of her stand against such behaviour, she said: 'A big no!' She wrote in her book that she reported the stewardess under her charge though it was 'painful' her to do so. 'In my opinion, such unprofessional behaviour can never be condoned,' she said. She has no idea what happened to the girl, and has not seen her since.

There are also tales of good-looking married male attendants who cheat on their wives, one who was seduced by a senior stewardess and a steward with a 'partner in every port'. She also dished the dirt on the 'tryers' among pilots who are tired of their wives and the 'willing, young impressionable girls' who surround them. Small minority But Ms Chew insisted that those in the mile high club are a small minority, and that they are not representative of the profession as a whole. She said she has personally encountered only two cases. 'The majority go home with a clean conscience,' she added. Not that there is any shortage of temptation in the skies. To fend off unwanted attention, she said, some girls took to wearing 'wedding bands' even though they were single.

Ms Chew claimed she got around 20 offers, but accepted none of them. 'The thing is, I don't know if the passengers were just using a 'cut-and-paste' on every girl,' she said. She insisted she is not out to slam the industry. She claimed to have loved her stint and stopped flying only so she could look after her 5-year-old son. She still misses the experience, she said.

The 1.71m former Miss Intercontinental and Miss Chinatown runner-up still walks with the leggy, straight-backed grace of a flight attendant. She said she wrote the book because she had many stories to tell. Her father, Mr Chew Kok Chang (better known by his pen name, Zhou Can), a Cultural Medallion winner for literature, also encouraged her to try her pen. So she and a friend, Mr Adrian Teo, 37, set up PepperConn, a social media and marketing company. They self-published the book at a cost of $9,000, and printed 3,000 copies.

Ms Chew said the book does not just have tales of sex - she could have added a lot more of that if she wanted. It is also full of humorous anecdotes, such as how an airline crew was booted out from a serviced apartment in Adelaide for stealing. Then there is the story of the stewardess who went without panties because she found the uniform 'inhibiting'. And in case you wonder, the book also reveals the state of a stewardess' panties after a tough flight of standing and squatting. Ms Chew said she also wanted to dispel the idea that stewardesses were just 'waitresses' in the air. The book features many examples of the hard work flight attendants put in.

Her business partner, Mr Teo, said: 'We try to have a good balance of the good and the bad. We wanted to be as close as possible to what is really happening, not to be scandalous.' What crew think of book So, what do airline crew members think about the book?

A 33-year-old air stewardess of 13 years, a friend of Ms Chew's, who gave her name only as Ms Celestine, said she is glad someone has finally decided to put their experiences on paper. After browsing through the book, she admitted that what it describes does happen, but added that hanky-panky among crew members in the air is not common. 'With the workload, I'd say that the people up there have no time,' she said. And such things happen in most workplaces, anyway, she added. 'People always view it as juicy because it's up there in the air,' she said. Former air steward Willy Tan, 33, who flew for three years, said it is 'quite common' for flight attendants, pilots and passengers to form relationships.

'When one is away from home, from friends and family, one tends to get lonely,' he noted. 'Friendships and other bonds may form quite naturally, through working, sightseeing and dining together. How far they want to take it is up to the individual.' He recalled that the closest encounter he had with mile-high clubbing was when a passenger complained about 'a couple (having sex) in the toilet'.

Designer adds airline-inspired clothes to her line of accessories

Tara Tonini designs accessories and clothing on Tyler Street. With her platinum hair and bright red lips, Tara Tonini bares a striking resemblance to the 1960s stewardesses that inspired her new clothing line.

The 23-year-old designer opened a Tyler Street studio in January to showcase her line of “Tara to the T” accessories, some of which will debut at tonight’s Dark Carnival. In February, Tonini added her own vintage-inspired clothing line, Sky Girls, to the mix.

“I learned all of my apparel skills, like pattern making and design, at school in California,” she said. “I studied costume design, and that is when I got really interested in vintage clothing and construction.”

Tonini, whose wide array of hats, feathered barrettes, and headbands are inspired by fashions from the 1920s to the 1970s, said her foray into clothing has an aerodynamic feel.

“I used colors from different airlines in the 1960s as my color palette,” she said.

While she has found her voice as a designer, the road that led to her business was a long one. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in California in 2005, she was hired as a lead fashion accessories designer for Tandy Brands Accessories in Dallas — a gig she felt strangled her creativity.

“I did it for several years and just wasn’t cut out for it,” Tonini said.

She decided to turn her love of period clothing and accessories into a business of her own just a stone’s throw from the Bishop Arts District.

“I just saw so much potential in the community,” she said. “It’s just one of those neighborhoods that really
sparked my interest and reminded me of home. I really enjoy Tyler Street. All of the artists that are in my building are super-friendly, they look out for each other, and they’re really making an effort to clean up the neighborhood.”

Tonini runs every aspect of her business herself — from the designing and sewing, to the packaging and selling — but admits to hiring a few interns from time to time.

“Tara’s work is timeless and classy without being dated,” said Oak Cliff designer Stephanie Hindall, founder of Etsy Dallas, a website where Tonini and others sell their wares. “You can wear anything she makes, anytime, anywhere.”

Tonini has been an Etsy member since it was established in late 2007. Hindall remembers selling some of her handmade hair accessories at Etsy’s first show.

“Ever since then, I’ve been a huge Tara fan,” she said. “I’m proud to call her a friend and fellow crafter living and working in Oak Cliff.”

Etsy artist Pamela Jackson, creator of Pamela Michelle designs, said the Bishop Arts area is great for independent designers like Tonini.

“The indie shops there, like Make Shop and Studio, are the first to welcome in the new, young talent,” Jackson said. “They aren’t looking for boring, repetitive, or safe items that line the walls of your typical craft show or shopping mall, but rather the unique and different.”

While she has had to get “really creative” because of the economic climate, Tonini said business has been fairly stable. She hopes to turn her studio into a boutique.

“It’s definitely a plan in the future,” she said. “Maybe next year when I’m a little bit more established in the neighborhood and we get some more foot traffic down Tyler Street.”

Sky Girls at the Race Track

My fabulous friend Melissa Meow and I dressed in our Sky Girls dresses and hit the Lone Star Race Track for a Texas size adventure!

Melissa and I started off our Sunday afternoon by standing at the Lone Star Race Track gate to greet the race track attendees at they entered the venue. We were on a mission to find the best dressed person at the event and crown them King or Queen. That is when we spotted Jay. Jay was dressed in head to toe black and white caring a very stylish man bag, that we soon found out carried his trumpet and hidden top hat. Jay plays a very important role at the race track, he starts off every horse race by planing his trumpet tunes.

As the horse races began we headed down to the grounds were the jockey's saddle up their race horses. I was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful bright colors that all the jockey's wore. I learned that these uniforms are referred to as silks usually the Jockey and horse wear matching silks. #12 was our pick to win the race. Why you ask? Because of the HOT PINK!

All in all it was a nice little adventure at the horse races!

Oooo there is nothing like spring time in Texas. I spent last weekend at the Lone Star Round Up Car show in Austin, TX. I sold a lot of my new up-cycled vintage line of dresses, shirts and skirts. The event was a blast! I did a lot of dancing, heard some great bands and saw some awesome cars.

This weekend I'm heading down to Fort Worth for the Funky Finds Spring Fling. My friends Jessica and Joe have been hard at work on this show for quite some time now and the event is going to ROCK! Vendors are coming in from all over to participate in the show. It's is going to be a day full of handmade goodies, pet adoptions and lots of family fun. Be sure to make it out!

Vintage clothing is one of my passions, and I am very lucky to know the talented and savvy local business owner, my friend Ken from Vintage Martini in the historic downtown Carrollton, TX. I first met Ken at the Dallas Antique Show around this time last year. Walking through Antique shows is always thrilling for me! I love to admire the grace and elegance that is found in vintage clothing. Vintage Martini's booth immediately drew me in. The space was full of beautiful antique mannequin heads topped with flawless vintage hats and hair accessories. Ken, the owner was so charming and provided me with amazing information about the pieces of clothing that filled his booth.

My score of the day was a late 1940's vintage play suit. I wore this outfit to the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender and I received endless complements on the fun and sassy peach and yellow play suit. It is one of my prized possessions in my closet. Ken spends time traveling the world buying and trading to keep Vintage Martini filled with unique and quality vintage clothing and accessories. Not to mention he has killer price points!

Today I spent the day at my friend Megan's house. I photographed the Sky girl line to be able to finalize the line sheets for the season. Megan is an inspiration to me. She is fabulous, funny and extremely business savvy!

I have been hard at work creating my first line of dress that will make their appearance at the Pin Show on February 26th, 2008. Sky Girls is a 1960's inspired stewardess line of dresses. They are flirty, fun and very colorful!

My Great Aunt Hazel was a flight attendant in the late 1960's. When she passed away a few years ago, my Grandmother gave me one of her favorite burgundy winter coats. When the package arrived at my door steps, I was very surprised to find that this fabulous 1970's jacket was not just fabulous, it was Valentino and accompanied by two beautiful silk Valentino scarfs.

I began to do research on vintage air lines uniforms and was very surprised to find that several designers including Pucci designed uniforms for these fablous women of the Sky. Knoppen is my favorite on-line source of uniform archives. I have spent many hours scrolling though the endless pages of photos and wonderful information.

My second favorite source of information is Stewardess Come Fly With Me! By: Elissa Stein. In this book Stein celebrates the ear when flying was chic and to be a stewardess was to live a life of stylish professional elegance and thrilling international adventure. The book if packed with vintage photographs, training materials, ads and snapshots from stewardesses themselves.

La Reunion Tree Carving Event

February 7, 2009 - 12pm to 4pm Open House and Artist Reception for our Tree Carving Program!

Joey and I have been working on the Nesting Tree. I took several donated sweaters and sewed them together to create a colorful tree wrapping. The neck portion of the sweaters were used to make small nesting areas. We also hung a handmade LATX banner on the site. The below pictures are our work in progress. Come make it out to the site to view all the wonderful one of a kind finished projects.

What to expect on Feb 7? See the decomposing art. Check out winning entries from Make Space for Art. Buy a t-shirt. Enjoy the outdoors. Take a native plants tour with Texas Discovery Gardens and more! Representatives with La Reunion's partner organization Preservation Tree Services will be on hand to answer all your tree questions. Sturdy shoes and long pants are a must on the site. Please dress accordingly.

The British postal service is dedicating a stamp to one of my favorite designers....Ms. Mary Quant. Quant is best known for the invention of the mini skirt in the swinging sixtys and her boutique, called Bazaar on Kings Road. Here is a little quote from the article. Read more from the Telegraph.

"I never intended to be outrageous. After all, I always wore tights. I had to have tights specially made because of the short skirts. They didn't exist then except for the theatre. Everyone wore stockings. So I got the theatrical manufacturers to make some for me and then I persuaded another manufacturer to set up. They were absolutely delighted because they sold fantastic quantities and, of course, it never stopped. Such fun."

BARBIE and Ken are beloved by millions of children - but the people behind the world's most popular dolls were involved in unsavory sexual behavior they kept secret for years, a new book reveals.

In "Toy Monster: The Big, Bad World of Mattel," out next month, Jerry Oppenheimer reveals that Jack Ryan, the Yale-educated designer who popularized Barbie, was a "full-blown seventies-style swinger" with "a manic need for sexual gratification."

Staging orgies at his Bel-Air mansion, Ryan, whose wives included Zsa Zsa Gabor, surrounded himself with busty Barbie clones, including Gwen Florea, who was the "voice of Barbie" in a line of talking dolls. The book quotes her: "He once said to me he loved me being tall so he could stick his nose in my boobs when he hugged me."

Ryan's friend, Stephen Gnass, confides to the author: "When Jack talked about creating Barbie . . . it was like listening to somebody talk about a sexual episode, almost like listening to a sexual pervert . . ." Ryan took calls at Mattel from a madam and patronized "high-class call girls to streetwalkers," including a "very thin and child-like" hooker. The book claims that Ryan "somehow rationalized that he was the only man in her life" until he was diagnosed with gonorrhea.

Barbie and Ken were named after the kids of Mattel founders Ruth and Elliot Handler - an honor that plagued Ken, who "grew up embarrassed and humiliated by having an anatomically incorrect boy doll named after him . . . [with] no hint of genitalia."

Despite marrying and having three kids, Ken was a closeted gay, Oppenheimer says. "To all those who knew him Ken Handler was a wonderful father, a loving husband . . . But there was another side to Ken. And in 1990 he was formally diagnosed with AIDS. His parents and wife were shocked." He died in 1994 in Greenwich Village, but obits didn't mention the disease.

La Reunion Tree Carving

My friend Sarah Jane Semrad is on of the founders of an organization in my town called La Reunion. La Reunion TX is creating an arts residency in Dallas that will host artists in both new and traditional media for periods ranging from one week to one year. In exchange for live/work space, artists will be expected to give back to the community through programs, exhibits, performances, and installations. Our residency will be built on a 35 acre site in Oak Cliff and will be as green and off-grid as possible, modeling to the community sustainable living. The project sounds so amazing to me that I have been looking forward to touring the site for quite some time. This past saturday was my lucky day!
My plan was to spend the day with Joey and tour the site, but while there I learned about this really cool project they are working on and got very inspired to apply to be a part of the 2009 tree carving project.

The Tree carving project is in partners with Preservation Tree and Texas Discovery Gardens.
The artist is challenged to create SOMETHING from a tree on the La Reunion TX land as a part of the ecological thinning of dead and dying non-native trees. Long story short many of the trees need to be removed from the land, but in order to do it in an eco-friendly and creative way the trees will be banded and artists will get a chance to be creative while the tree decomposes over time.

I have been very inspired by a very cool book and documentary project called Handmade Nation. In this trailer they show a clip of Knitta' a Houston, TX group that knit items and use them to tag things such as telephone polls and street signs. This inspired me for a proposal for the La Reunion tree carving project.

Our plan is to collect donated sweaters made out of natural materials (Cotton/ wool, no synthetic materials). We plan to remove all the green branches and wrap the tree trunk from base to tip with the recycled sweaters, creating a colorful tree wrapping. The removed branches will be used to make a green color "tree skirt" at the base of the tree. With the remaining recycled materials we plan to de-constructed the yards and material to create a La Reunion logo flag and hang it from the top of the tree.

The idea is to use all natural materials. As the tree decomposes so will the natural fibers from the sweater material. Our hopes are for animals living on the land such as birds and mice to use the tree and sweater materials to create nests for living.

Last step is to see if we get accepted for the project or not....h JaHa

I know every girl you ask would say that their honey is talented in some shape or form...but my honey really is talented!!!

I love hand made gifts, but this one really brought me to tears...happy ones that is. For those of you who really know me you understand a lot more about this painting. It's not just hot pink, glittery and pretty.

Living in South LA gave me an every day experience with the Mexican culture. Being a white girl from NoCal, my life dramatically changed when I moved to LA. I ate Mexican food every day, shopped at the Mexican grocery stores, learned how to cook traditional food from my close friends and their family and even learned how to speak Spanish at work. This painting means so much to me because my honey knows my past, my passion and is ridding with me into the future. Every day I walk into my studio I get a 4ft visual of beautiful pink glamorous happiness. Thank you Joey...you rock my socks off!

I have always been one to make holiday gifts for my family and friends. Now that my business has taken off I found it hard to hand make everything myself this year so I relied on my fellow crafters and Etsy heros to help me stuff my friends and family's stockings this year.

Pin Show 2009

We did it again! We're in like flin....to the pin show that is. If your not familiar with this amazing event, I just want to let you know it's something you don't want to miss! Last year I was very fortunate to be a participant in the first event and this year is going to be bigger and better than before if you can believe it.

This fabulous Red Carpet event will feature 20-45 independent fashion and accessory designers showcasing over 200 looks on the runway. Beyond the runway you will witness live photoshoots on two styled sets, mingle with designers and even get the rare opportunity to purchase your favorite look right off the runway before it hits stores.

I am going above and beyond my hat designs and adding a line of apparel for 2009. It's a large step to take, but I'm so excited about my upcoming year.

If your like me you've been running late with the finalization of your holiday gifts. To be completely honest I haven't event shipped my family's gifts yet. But possible my gift will be more memorable that way...actually that just sounds like an excuse for me being late.

Obviously these PROUD recycling people in Portugal did not waist any time with their handmade holiday. They made this amazing Christmas tree out of recycled soda bottles.....Talk about going green for the holidays. My version of going green tends to be re-gifting haha!

Art meets fashion at this unique collaborative show featuring handmade designs and art dedicated to the infamous Dallas based outlaws; Bonnie and Clyde.

Designer Tara Tonini will be debuting a one of a kind line of women’s and men’s hats and hair accessories inspired by Depression-era America. She recently received outstanding reviews from her runway looks featured in the Pin Show, Dallas’s independent runway show.

Joey Seeman takes his inspiration from the work of the W.P.A. muralists and particularly the American Regionalists who told the American story during the Depression. His most recent one-man show at Canvas Gallery in Dallas followed on the heels of two successful shows in Los Angeles.

Living in Dallas, the home base of many of Bonnie and Clyde’s endeavors, gave the pair the original inspiration for creating a tribute to the notorious outlaws who roamed the American countryside but always considered Dallas their home base.

This show is part of a three day alternative shopping event, Dallas Indie Experience which also includes Urban Street Bazaar in Bishop Arts district on Saturday Dec. 6th and Deck the Halls at the historic South Side on Lamar building on Sunday Dec. 7th. All three shows will spotlight independent Dallas business and artists.

One word to describe this event would be BLAST! I made a ton of new friends like Bonnie Rue from Model Citizens, I received a lot of love from the local shoppers and even got a change to hang with my favorite Austin Mafiosa's Jennifer Perkins from Naughty Secretary Club and Hope Perkins from Hot Pink Pistol.

The event was full off really cool hand made items! I picked up a business card holder from 11:11 enterprises, a hand painted wooden ring from Pamela Michelle, a killer necklace from Sprout Jewelry and new iron transfers from Sublime Stitching and some kids items from Baby Bolt.

Now it's back to work!

Urban Street Bazaar was a huge success for me this past saturday. I want to give a special thanks to all my customers for the sweet words and rock'en Tara to the T designs. I am supper excited about the feather fascinator headbands and and feather fedoras.

Wonderful wonderland of JUNK!

It's been officially 1 week since my trip to Canton, and boy do I miss it already. For those who know me, you would agree that I have a soft spot in my heart for junk!!! Last friday I scored a 1950's kitchen table, which ended up in my sewing studio because I don't eat much at home these days. I also purchased a plethora of vintage hats that I will be restoring for my restored vintage hat collection that will day bu at this Saturdays Urban Street Bazaar. The $200 that I stuffed in my cowboy boot got me a long way in this wonderful wonderland of junk...BUT WARNING! Scooters are all over the place so watch out for your toes...old people tend to get feisty when they have 4 wheels of pure scooter power under them.

Art Chicas Unidas

The Art Chicas Unidas program is run by La Reunion. The Dallas Craft Mafia will be sponsoring a girl for this upcoming art event. Check it out!!!

WHAT IS IT - ART CHICAS UNIDAS
Small teams of high school aged girls will work with professional women artists selected by jury and create one of a kind art works based on materials from our 35 acres site in Oak Cliff. The finished art works will be on display that same evening and all proceeds from sales go back into the Art Chicas Unidas program. What makes this program unique? This year we are working with Deaf Action Center, socio-economically challenged schools as well as girls that are getting the full art experience like at Booker T. We engage all walks of life and backgrounds and introduce new skills and interests, from photography to guitar to encaustic.

We will honor our Mentor Madres this year with your names across our invitational postcard to the reception. Even if you can't make the reception November 8, please support this program today. Download the form and mail or email back. Deadline Oct 18 to be on the card! Don't delay!
